Zero-derived forms in the mental lexicon: Experimental evidence from Italian

چکیده
Abstract Our paper investigates how zero-affixed verbal forms (specifically, denominal and deadjectival verbs) are processed by native speakers of Italian during visual word recognition. More specifically, we verify whether, possibly to what extent, the processing such differs from or resembles verbs resulting two other productive formation schemas in Italian, i. e., suffixation parasynthesis. The interest a comparison lies fact that three considered behave similarly functional point view, e.: i) they all change category base, ii) select same base (nouns adjectives), iii) show similar semantic characteristics. However, this shared function is realized means different formal exponents (both overt covert) which might imply degrees complexity. Crucially, parasynthesis display an derivational marking, while zero-affixation obviously does not. On premises, whether strength connections between morphologically complex words their bases affected nature transcategorization marking (overt v mathvariant="italic">s vs factors play more determining role, conducted psycholinguistic experiment involving lexical decision task combined with masked priming paradigm, allows focusing on relations mental lexicon. Results indicate suffixed but parasynthetic forms. We interpret results discussing possibility perception morphological relationship depend less overtness overall complexity process.

In Northern Italian, the phones [s] and [z] are in complementary distribution and only [z] can occur in intervocalic position (for example, ca[z]a ‘house’). Although intervocalic /S/ voicing is a productive process, it does not apply to stem-initial /S/, which is realized as [s] (for example, a+[s] immetrico ‘asymmetrical’). This morphological blockage of intervocalic /S/ voicing is also synchr...
متن کاملThe mental lexicon is fully specified: evidence from eye-tracking.
Four visual-world experiments, in which listeners heard spoken words and saw printed words, compared an optimal-perception account with the theory of phonological underspecification. This theory argues that default phonological features are not specified in the mental lexicon, leading to asymmetric lexical matching: Mismatching input (pin) activates lexical entries with underspecified coronal s...
متن کاملEvidence for widespread thematic structure in the mental lexicon
Semantic structure in the mental lexicon is often assumed to follow a taxonomic structure grouping similar items. This study uses a network clustering analysis of a massive word association dataset that does not primarily focus on concrete noun categories, but includes the majority of the words used in daily life. At this scale, we found widespread overlap between thematically organized cluster...
متن کاملSyllable structure in the mental lexicon : neuropsychological and computational evidence
This thesis investigated the fundamental representations within the mental-lexicon and whether such representations are fixed or differ according to the characteristics of various languages. It looked at whether syllable structure is represented at distinct levels of linguistic representation at phonological and phonetic levels, with phonology governed by the demands of a combinatorial system (...

The article by Brenna and Spandonaro on interregional mobility for acute hospital care in Italy raises important issues concerning social and territorial equity in a healthcare system. Based on Regions and private providers’ strategic behavior, the hypothesis adopted to explain patient cross-border mobility (CBM), demonstrated by statistical analysis, may be further explored using qualitative m...
